The music of the Cistercian nuns is entirely focused on simplicity and purity, and transports us to their world of absolute devotion and concentration. According to the rule of Bernard of Clairvaux, the nuns in Cistercian convents spent their entire lives within the walls of the convent. However their hymns, characterised by deep spirituality and late mediaeval mysticism, could be heard from behind the choir screens. Rather than focusing entirely on the discovery of ‘new’ music, the German ensemble Per-Sonat led by Sabine Lutzenberger is particularly interested in collecting and conveying music and poetry from the mediaeval tradition.
